IPAF MEWP Spotter (E-Learning) Course FAQs

    About IPAF

Q1. My site has told me I need IPAF Training. What does this mean?
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. It sets training standards, provides accredited courses and aims to help improve health, safety and skills across sectors such as construction or maintenance that use powered access equipment. If your site or employer requires IPAF training, it means you'll be operating mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and need the correct IPAF qualification to use this equipment safely and legally.

    About the Course

Q2. What is a MEWP Spotter?
A MEWP Spotter observes operations on site and where necessary, communicates with the Operator to help guide the machine safely around potential hazards or obstacles.
    __________________________________________________________________________

Q3. Why is a Spotter important?
A Spotter helps reduce the risk of accidents by spotting hazards and guiding the operator where visibility is restricted.
    __________________________________________________________________________

Q4. What does the MEWP Spotter e-learning course cover?
The course covers the Spotter role, hazard awareness, communication, industry-established hand signals, safe positioning, and working with Operators.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q5. What do the different IPAF categories mean?
Each machine type is given an IPAF category based on whether it’s static or mobile and how it moves:
    • 3A category -  covers mobile vertical lifts (scissor lifts), which move straight up and down.
    • 3B category - covers mobile boom lifts (cherry pickers), which can extend both up and out for greater reach.
    • 1B category - covers static boom lifts, which have a fixed base and extend up and out.
The IPAF MEWP Spotter course is not a category, if you require training for a specific MEWP, you can find out more information using our IPAF courses page. Understanding these categories helps Spotters recognise how different MEWPs operate and move so they can support safe guidance on site. To learn more about the machine categories, you can visit the IPAF machine categories page.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q6. How long does the course take to complete?
The IPAF MEWP Spotter e-learning course takes approximately 2.5 hours and is completed online. You can work through it at your own pace, but must be completed within 6 months of booking.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

    Who Should Attend

Q7. Who is this course for?
Anyone who needs to help a MEWP Operator safely manoeuvre a MEWP into position. IPAF also recommends this course is taken by operators, site managers and supervisors to ensure everyone understands the role of a Spotter, hand signals, and where a Spotter should safely be positioned.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q8. Are there any entry requirements?
Delegates must be at least 16 years old, in good health, and have a good understanding of written and spoken English.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

    How the Training Works

Q9. Is there any practical training in this course?
No. This is an online theory course due to the role of a Spotter being observational and procedural rather than machine operation.

    __________________________________________________________________________

Q10. What should I prepare for the e-learning course?
You'll need a smartphone, laptop or computer with a working camera and internet access. A live passport-style photo will be required at the start of the course, so please allow your device access to your camera. To check your device supports IPAF e-learning, you can check compatibility here before you begin.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________

    Q11. How does e-learning work?
This self-paced e-learning course lets you study at a time, pace and place that suits you. E-Learning gives you the flexibility to focus on specific areas and progress through the material in sections at your own pace.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q12. How do I access the e-learning module?
The link to join the e-learning course will come from noreply@ipaf.org once your booking is confirmed. We recommend adding this to your list of safe senders or checking your junk/spam folder.

    ______________________________________________________________________________
